Why Foster?

Fostering is the heart of our rescue mission. Every animal we save needs a safe, loving space to decompress, heal, and learn what love feels like before finding a forever home. By opening your home temporarily, you directly create space for us to rescue another dog or cat in need. Fostering isn’t a backup role — it’s the reason we’re able to rescue at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A safe, stable environment where a dog or cat can decompress, adjust, and prepare for adoption. This includes basic care, affection, structure, and communication with the rescue.

  • Fosters usually keep animals for an average of four months. Some pets need more time because of age, illness, injury, or behavioral challenges. The time commitment will always be discussed up front before you agree to foster, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Most foster families keep their animals until adoption, providing stability and continuity that helps the pet thrive.

If you can only temporarily foster (anything less than a few months), please make sure to note that clearly in your application — we’ll match you with short‑term or transitional fosters that fit your availability.

  • Yes in fact many fosters do! We match you with an animal whose needs fit your schedule — lower‑energy, crate‑trained, or independent dogs, or cats who are comfortable alone during the day.

  • No. We cover all pre-approved vet care, medications, and supplies (food, crate, leash, toys, etc.).

  • Nothing. We provide everything, but you’re welcome to use your own if you prefer.

Foster Agreement

1. Ownership and Legal Status
All foster animals remain the sole property of Furry Rescue Foundation. The foster may not sell, rehome, transfer, loan, or otherwise relinquish custody of the animal to any individual or entity not approved by the rescue. The rescue may remove the animal from the foster home at any time, at its sole discretion, without prior notice.

2. Care and Welfare Requirements
The foster agrees to provide safe, species‑appropriate housing, daily care, enrichment, supervision, and humane treatment at all times. No physical punishment, unsafe environments, or neglectful conditions are permitted. The foster agrees not to allow the animal to breed under any circumstances.

3. Medical Care and Emergencies
The rescue covers pre‑approved veterinary care. The foster must contact the rescue before any non‑emergency veterinary visit. In life‑threatening emergencies, the foster must seek immediate care and notify the rescue as soon as possible. The foster is financially responsible for any veterinary care obtained without rescue approval, except in true emergencies.

4. Transportation
The foster agrees to transport the animal to veterinary appointments, adoption events, meet‑and‑greets, and other rescue‑approved activities unless alternate arrangements are made in advance.

5. Communication and Updates
Weekly photos/videos are required. Behavioral changes, concerns, injuries, illnesses, or incidents must be reported promptly. The foster agrees to maintain open and timely communication with the rescue.

6. Safety and Incident Reporting
The foster must immediately report bites, scratches, escapes, illness, injury, or any safety hazard involving the animal. The foster agrees not to take the animal to dog parks, off‑leash areas, or other uncontrolled environments.

7. Household Requirements
All household members must agree to fostering. The foster must notify the rescue of major changes such as moving, new pets, household composition changes, or safety concerns. The foster accepts full responsibility for the safety of all household members, visitors, minors, and guests who interact with the animal.

8. Supplies and Support
Rescue‑provided supplies remain the property of the rescue and must be returned in usable condition when the foster period ends. The foster agrees to use supplies only for the assigned foster animal.

9. Adoption and Return Policies
The foster may apply to adopt but must follow the rescue’s adoption process. The foster agrees to return the animal immediately upon request, for any reason, at the rescue’s discretion.

10. Home Access and Welfare Checks
The foster agrees to allow virtual or in‑person welfare checks by rescue representatives as needed to ensure the animal’s safety and well‑being.

11. Liability
The rescue is not liable for injuries, bites, scratches, zoonotic illness, property damage, or harm caused by the foster animal. The foster assumes all risks associated with caring for the animal and agrees to supervise the animal appropriately at all times.
